By Andrew Leigh

Would anyone seriously argue with the saying nobody’s perfect ? Of course not. And yet throughout the world millions of otherwise sane and intelligent people saddle themselves with a life principle that dooms them to frustration and constant disappointment — the desire to do things perfectly.

You could argue that setting such high standards is good for you, leading naturally to always being at your best. Many people do just that with proud statements like: oh yes, I’m a bit of a perfectionist — achieving anything but the absolute best is failure in my book.

But here’s the perfectionist paradox — as a perfectionist you can simultaneously hold feelings of moral superiority because of the high standards you’ve set yourself, and inferiority because you never meet those standards. Far from leading to happiness and achievement such attitudes are instead deeply negative.

Here are five reasons why:

1. It leads to a constant sense of failure.

Perfection is a vanishingly rare occurrence and perfectionists tend to focus on the flaws rather than the achievement. So no matter how well a task is done, there is always a sense of failure that it wasn’t done even better. An example is the golfer who hits a stunning shot to within a few feet of the pin but feels disappointed with himself for not getting it even closer.

2. It leads to procrastination and lowered output.

Put at its simplest — if your subconscious knows that starting on a project is going to be proof that you aren’t good enough, where’s the incentive to get moving? And when you are finally making progress it becomes difficult to finish until it really is the best it can be. Result: missed deadlines and a process of achievement full of terror and pain.

3. It leads to missed opportunities.

That’s because perfectionists will often be waiting for exactly the ‘right’ time to start — and guess what — now is never it. There’s the old joke about the motorist stopping to ask directions only to be told ‘oh, I wouldn’t start from here if I were you.’ It pretty much sums up the perfectionist attitude to opportunities.

4. It screws up your kids

If you want to transfer your own feelings of perfectionist inadequacy to your kids, then focus on the stuff they get wrong rather than what they do right. Imagine the pressure on a child knowing that only perfection is good enough.

5. It stops you learning from your mistakes

One side effect of a perfectionist attitude is a terror of making mistakes. Mistakes equate with failure to a perfectionist. So either you don’t acknowledge and learn from your mistakes or you simply don’t make them. But the only way not to make mistakes is to limit what you do — thus limiting yourself and your growth as a person. The perfectionist paradox strikes again.

Every perfectionist I’ve ever met believed that being a perfectionist was hard-wired into their personality — the only way they could ever be.

The good news is that it’s not true; you can Escape the Perfectionist Trap — and in so doing improve your self esteem, your belief in yourself and your ability to achieve. See the follow up article More than Perfect to find out how.

Affirmations for Money

By Remez Sasson

Affirmations for MoneyPeople keep asking me about affirmations, and how to use them. Some of the questions are about affirmations for money. Here is a typical question: “I want to affirm for money. Can I use the affirmation, ‘I am making 100,000.- dollars every month’?

You can use any affirmation you want, but you have to believe that what you are affirming can happen, and be willing to do whatever it requires to make it come true.

To make your affirmation work you need to be practical, and use your common sense. You should also be willing to work and follow ideas and opportunities, and not just remain passive and wait for the money to come.

Affirmations, when repeated correctly, motivate, energize, and open your mind and eyes to see opportunities that otherwise you wouldn’t have seen. It is not enough just to affirm. You also need to take action, and take advantage of the opportunities that come your way.

If you choose to repeat the above mentioned affirmation, ask yourself whether you are feeling comfortable with this amount of money. Think whether you can handle it. Think whether you are willing to make changes in your life, which you might be required to do to make the affirmation come true.

More than often, success is a gradual process, one thing leading to another. When you affirm for money, you might be offered a better job, an additional job, or offered to do something in exchange for money. Think well, before saying, “No, I won’t take this offer, because I am affirming for a greater amount of money”. Small amounts of money add to bigger amounts. If you just wait for the big amount it means that you are either impractical, lazy, or want to get something without giving anything in return, such as service, time or effort.

Remember, even small opportunities can lead to greater opportunities. Don’t neutralize the power that you create through the affirmations, by remaining passive and waiting for the money to drop on your head from the sky, or waiting to win the lottery.

Sometimes, there is a subconscious inner resistance, which can sabotage the affirmation, so it is a good idea to analyze what you think and feel about the amount of money. Often, it is more practical to start with smaller amounts, and as you gain confidence and success, you can move to larger amounts.

Also, consider whether you want money, or the things money can buy. You may use affirmations for money, but you may also use affirmations to get the object/s the money can buy. For some people, affirming for what they really want might work better, than affirming for money.

Affirmations can be used not just for money or possessions, but also for creating positive habits, improving your life, and for creating success in any area of your life.

You can find many affirmations for money and for everything else, including full instructions about using affirmations, in my book, Affirmations Words of Power.

Can You Improve Your Life?

By Remez Sasson

Can you improve your life?

Can you achieve success?

Do all the books, courses, webinars and workshops on self-improvement, personal growth and on success really help?

Yes, they do help, but not always, and not all people benefit from them equally.

Do you spend a lot of money on books courses and workshops, but nothing changes in your life, nothing improves in your life?

So why is that?

Let me ask you, do you really and truly want to make changes in your life?

Would you do anything to achieve the success you want?

Would you invest time and money in study, research and the necessary actions to improve your life or achieve your dreams?

  • Most people have dreams, but back in their mind, deep in their subconscious mind, they do not really want their dreams to come true. They are afraid of the changes in their life that the achievement of their dream might lead to, and in a subconscious way resist the changes, postpone them or refuse to take action.
  • There are people who feel they do not deserve to better their life.
  • Other people are deep in negative thinking.
  • People love the familiar and afraid of the new.
  • People have dreams, but are afraid to follow their dreams.

Do you sometimes say you wish you had millions of dollars in your bank account? This is a very pleasant thought, but how are you going to get this money? What are the chances that you win the lottery or inherit this amount of money? How would gain this money?

Would affirmations and visualization bring this money? If you are persistent with these techniques, and do them right, sooner or later an opportunity might pop up. The question asked is, would you recognize the opportunity? Would you enter the door that was opened? Are you really ready to go all the way?

Suppose you start a business, are you willing to dedicate your time and energy, day after day, to make your business grow? Are you willing to make the necessary sacrifices that go with this kind of lifestyle? Some people love this and make a lot of money, but not all people.

Most people want to improve their life to a certain extent, sometimes only in small matters, anything more can seem threatening and intimidating.

So, to conclude, can you improve your life?

Yes you can, but:

  1. You need to know exactly what you want.
  2. You need to be willing to do things, not just dream and wait for things to happen.
  3. Be willing to give your energy and time.
  4. Be willing to change your lifestyle.
  5. Overcome the fear of change.
  6. Act, don’t only dream, and if there are problems, difficulties or obstacles, don’t give up.

There is one more thing I would like to say. Quite often, after reading a book about the law of attraction, affirmations, visualization, or any self improvement technique, people want to read another book, and then another one, participate in another workshop, always telling themselves that after the next book or workshop they are going to use what they learned, but this time never comes. They enjoy the process of reading, learning collecting knowledge, but they never act. They never use what they learned. This can become a habit, and consequently they never do anything to improve their life.

You may go on reading and participating in workshops if you wish, but you have to start using what you learned, otherwise you will be always chasing after the next book, workshop or fad, but never doing anything to really improve your life.

Acting in The Certain Way

Excerpt from The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles

Thought is the creative power or the impelling force which causes the creative power to act. Thinking in a certain way will bring riches to you, but you must not rely upon thought alone, paying no attention to personal action. That is the rock upon which many otherwise scientific thinkers meet shipwreck — the failure to connect thought with personal action.

We have not yet reached the stage of development, even supposing such a stage to be possible, in which a person can create directly from formless substance without nature’s processes or the work of human hands. A person must not only think, but his personal action must supplement his thought. By thought you can cause the gold in the hearts of the mountains to be impelled toward you, but it will not mine itself, refine itself, coin itself into double eagles, and come rolling along the roads, seeking its way into your pocket.

Under the impelling power of the supreme spirit, people’s affairs will be so ordered that someone will be led to mine the gold for you. Other people’s business transactions will be so directed that the gold will be brought toward you. And you must so arrange your own business affairs that you may be able to receive it when it comes to you. Your thought makes all things, animate and inanimate, work to bring you what you want, but your personal activity must be such that you can rightly receive what you want when it reaches you. You are not to take it as charity, nor to steal it. You must give every man more in use value than he gives you in cash value.

The scientific use of thought consists in forming a clear and distinct mental image of what you want, in holding fast to your purpose to get what you want, and in realizing with grateful faith that you do get what you want.

Your faith and purpose positively impress your vision upon formless substance, which has the same desire for more life that you have, and this vision, received from you, sets all the creative forces at work in and through their regular channels of action, but directed toward you.

It is not your part to guide or supervise the creative process. All you have to do with that is to retain your vision, stick to your purpose, and maintain your faith and gratitude.

But you must act in a certain way, so that you can appropriate what is yours when it comes to you and so that you can meet the things you have in your picture and put them in their proper places as they arrive.

You can really see the truth of this. When things reach you, they will be in the hands of others, who will ask an equivalent for them. And you can only get what is yours by giving the other person what is rightfully his.

Your pocketbook is not going to be transformed into a Fortunata’s purse, which shall be always full of money without effort on your part.

This is the crucial point in the science of getting rich — right here, where thought and personal action must be combined. There are very many people who, consciously or unconsciously, set the creative forces in action by the strength and persistence of their desires, but who remain poor because they do not provide for the reception of the thing they want when it comes.

By thought, the thing you want is brought to you. By action, you receive it.

Whatever your action is to be, it is evident that you must act NOW. You cannot act in the past, and it is essential to the clearness of your mental vision that you dismiss the past from your mind. You cannot act in the future, for the future is not here yet. And you cannot tell how you will want to act in any future contingency until that contingency has arrived.

Because you are not in the right business or the right environment now, do not think that you must postpone action until you get into the right business or environment. And do not spend time in the present taking thought as to the best course in possible future emergencies; have faith in your ability to meet any emergency when it arrives.

If you act in the present with your mind on the future, your present action will be with a divided mind, and will not be effective.

Put your whole mind into present action.

Do not give your creative impulse to original substance, and then sit down and wait for results. If you do, you will never get them. Act now. There is never any time but now, and there never will be any time but now. If you are ever to begin to make ready for the reception of what you want, you must begin NOW.

And your action, whatever it is, must most likely be in your present business or employment, and must be upon the persons and things in your present environment.

Hold with faith and purpose the vision of yourself in the better environment, but act upon your present environment with all your heart, and with all your strength, and with all your mind. Do not spend any time in day dreaming or castle building; hold to the one vision of what you want, and act NOW.

Seven Rituals to Improve Life and Business

By Lisa Rickwood

What do Valentine’s Day, Christmas, dating, dinner and a movie, marriage and couples have in common? Rituals. A ritual is defined as ‘any method of doing something in which the details are always faithfully repeated.’ To relate this to your life, rituals include: the time you wake up, how your brush your teeth, the route you take to work – you get the idea.

Rituals give life meaning and help us celebrate milestones in our lives. They offer security, stability and routine and a sense of calmness to an otherwise chaotic existence. Rituals date back thousands of years with the ancient Egyptians. Theirs was a culture seeped in traditions. Eating, drinking, bathing, hunting and burying the dead were a succession of rituals.

Over centuries, mankind lost the importance of rites. However, many of us in the 21st century are reconsidering traditions and adding them to our lives as we desperately seek meaning during this increasingly shallow and disconnected time.

If you want to relax, enjoy your life and feel more connected to others, consider adding rituals to your life.

SEVEN RITUALS TO IMPROVE YOUR LIFE AND BUSINESS:

1. Create a morning ritual to help you wake up refreshed and ready to tackle your day. You might get up a few minutes early to: read, walk your dog, jog, play an instrument, write, do yoga – it doesn’t matter, just claim this time as your own. That way you have time for yourself and don’t feel resentful if your day is hectic.

2. When you’re at work, create a ritual to start your day. This might include: having a coffee at your desk, checking your PDA for appointments, not answering phonecalls for 15 minutes while you read and respond to urgent emails. You might also: set an agenda for the day, plan goals for the week…the list is endless.

3. At work, find ways to meet colleagues and socialize during a lunch hour instead of running a million errands. Also, if you’re challenged and need help, you’ll have some friends that can work with you. If you work alone, join a network group that is conveniently located near you, cost efficient and helps you build your business. Make it a ritual to attend the meetings and meet new people and create a ritual to record new contacts.

4. Create time saving rituals for work. For example, only check email three times a day, organize your files, file away unused papers as soon as possible; create ‘time boundaries’ where you can’t be interrupted. Close the door, let the message machine take a call, get up and take mini breaks every 90 minutes (for productivity).

5. At the end of a busy week, designate a night as Movie or board game night with friends or family. If being at home doesn’t excite you, you could sign up for sports and get out your weekly frustrations. The key is to make time for something special once you complete work; this offers you a buffer to help ease you through a hectic week as you have something to look forward to doing.

6. Create home rituals to ease into your time off. These rituals may include chores as you play ‘catch-up’ on errands. Be sure to add play to your list. Include ways to decompress, times to exercise, time with your partner, friends, family and time alone.

7. Create self-care rituals that put your needs first. If you think this is selfish, consider the rules on airplanes. Parents have access to oxygen masks before their children so they can care for their family in the event of an emergency. You’re no good to anyone if you’re exhausted, resentful or angry because you don’t have time for yourself. For example, get enough rest, make time for things you enjoy such as: walking, yoga, working out at the gym, playing an instrument, biking, reading, writing…whatever makes you happy.

Acceptance Leads to Inner Peace

Inner PeaceThere are certain things we can change in our life, but there are also things that we cannot change. If we keep worrying about them we lose our peace, but if we accept them, they stop being important, and we stop worrying about them. What we cannot change and cannot influence no matter what, should not be of concern to us.

People tend to focus and think about things which they have no control over. Why worry about something that worry will not change? Why care about what other people think of us, when we are not even sure what they are thinking about? Why worry about the weather, if we cannot change it? Why worry and feel concerned about other people actions, about which we have no control?

Learn to accept what cannot be changed and you will experience inner peace. I am not telling you to be passive and stop acting in the world. Change what you can. Improve what you can. This will improve your life and improve how you feel, but learn to accept people, circumstances and situations that are beyond your control.

Sometimes, acceptance is temporary, until you know more, learn more and reach a stage, where you can change and improve certain situations that you could do nothing about before.

Once you open mind to acceptance, and start accepting what you cannot change, you automatically relieve yourself of much stress, anxiety and worry. Remember, acceptance leads to inner peace, and inner peace is real freedom and to happiness.

Enjoy Peace of Mind in Daily Life

If you thought that inner peace is a state of weakness and passivity you are wrong! You may lead normal life, like everyone else, but enjoy a state of inner peace and inner strength that no external conditions can disturb.

If I allow bitterness and resentment to fester inside, it will make my relationships guarded and unsatisfying. The more I close down to others, the more I become a stranger to myself. By letting go of sorrow and negativity, I can keep my nature open and loving. Remaining open to life, with its constant adventures and opportunities to grow, is the only way to reach my full potential.
